Wanderers traveled to Hoveton expecting a tougher game than the one we'd participated in on Mulberry Park earlier in the season where we comfortably ran out 4-0 winners, and that's exactly what we got.
With no recognised goalkeeper available it was down to Jesse Payne-Wilkins to wear the gloves and he certainly didn't let anyone down despite being half the size of a normal sized keeper.
Mulbarton started the quicker and spurned a couple of opportunities to take the lead before a long kick from Wilkins bounced over the half way line, was missed by a Hoveton defender and fell into the path of Mark Appleton. His lob beat the keeper but hit the post, but thankfully he was alert enough to pounce on the rebound and tap in from close range.
The referee was having fun with his cards and after a naughty foul from the Wherrymen skipper he managed to book 3 Hoveton players before the freekick was taken.
Appleton doubled his tally after playing a 1-2 with Freemantle, he flicked the ball over a defender and shot in from a tight angle.
Strangely we were then made to play 7 minutes injury time, and towards the end of this period Hoveton grabbed a goal back to give them some hope.
Half Time - Hoveton 1-2 Mulbarton
Hoveton now had something to play for and their long balls into the penalty area were starting to look more threatening. Fortunately we were able to score the next goal, after Mark Appleton's effort had hit the post Adam Brown was on hand to tuck in the rebound.
The hosts were now throwing everything at us, hitting the bar twice and forcing our defence and make-shift goalkeeper into some heroics. We also hit the woodwork twice, with both Mark Appleton and Calvin Butler denied by the posts.
With 10 minutes to go the hosts thought they had reduced the deficit when a dangerous freekick was met by their centre forward who directed a powerful header into the top corner of the net. The linesman's flag went up immediately, the referee signalled that he had awarded the goal, saw the linesman's flag and waved his hands dismissively. Eventually he went over to consult the man with the flag and after long deliberation disallowed the goal for offside.
The home side were furious with the decision but managed to play on and did score a second goal, this time from a corner, to give them some hope of getting back into the game.
We were now trying to hold on to possession to run the clock down, but when Mark Appleton was trying to shield the ball in the corner and a Hoveton defender lunged in, completely missing the ball, he saw his opportunity and ran the ball into the six yard box and smashed it inside the near post to finish the game off after playing another 7 minutes of injury time.
Full Time - Hoveton 2 - 4 Mulbarton
Ugly scenes followed the full time whistle as the Wherrymen forward ran over to the Mulbarton linesman to confront him, putting his head in his face and threatening him. He then turned to threaten all of the Mulbarton players, management and supporters, claiming he could "knock you all out". Thankfully he was restrained because everybody was really scared.
