Wanderers Back to Winning Ways

Mulbarton got back to winning ways and made it through to the 3rd round of the CS Morley Cup with a last gasp win at previously unbeaten Beccles Reserves.

After a run of two games without a win, the Wanderers started well and created a couple of half chances but to no avail.

The blues played a 4-5-1 formation and packed the midfield, with Nick Appleton pulling the strings sitting in front of the back 4.

Jim Dyson had to make way for Dion Hill on the half hour due to catching a cold from the children he teaches at school.

The pressure paid off after 35 minutes when George Newbery plucked the ball from the air and smartly half volleyed into the bottom corner.

Solid defending and a few missed headed chances from corners for the home side ensured Mulbarton went into the break 1-0 to the good.

The rain came down in the second half as Beccles tried everything to get back in to it.

Despite pressure, not clear cut chances were being created as Mulbarton looked to pounce on the counter attack with Ian Babb leading the line superbly.

Greg Rowland made some vital saves in goal but there was nothing he could do to prevent Beccles equalising. As the conditions worsened, a goal mouth scramble resulted in the home sides substitute firing in off the post from close range.

However, it was a Mulbarton substitute Tom Brown that had the last laugh, again helped by the wet conditions, as his near post corner found its way straight into the back of the net.

Beccles came again for the last 5 minutes but solid defending by the impressive back four of Richard Leather, Ben Fisher, Ian Robinson and Nick MacKenzie meant the away side were in the hat for the third round of the cup.
