Eliot Altay was the hero as he converted a last gasp penalty to secure our first ever victory at Step 6.

Wanderers players and supporters would have been looking forward to the visit of Diss Town on Tuesday evening as soon as the final whistle blew on Saturday, frustrated that we couldn't quite get the 3 points we would have deserved. Diss arrived at Mulberry Park in good spirits following a 3-2 victory over Leiston Reserves, who will be our next opponents on Saturday.

Of course, It was not the first time that Town had been to the village for a competitive game. Many will remember our 4th Round Senior Cup tie back in November 2014. None more so than skipper Mark Sutcliffe, who scored a 60th minute equaliser to force the game into extra-time. We would eventually succumb to defeat as Diss ran out 4-2 winners but it was a heroic effort from a side playing in Division One of the Anglian Combination at the time.

Wanderers started brightly and the game was only two minutes old when Tom Amis' free kick was deflected onto the bar and then moments later, Hayhoe did well to deny Sam Whiting from close range. Diss then showed their attacking capabilities with a swift counter attack that resulted in a shot from Leitao which took a deflection and Wright did well to react quickly to push the ball away into safety.

Jack Simpson, who was back in the starting line-up was setting the tone in Midfield by nullifying any potential Diss attacks both on the ground and in the air. Gibbons and Guyton were following suit and looking to quickly release the ball into the final third but Diss were defending well. Hayhoe in particular was having a solid game and was quick off his line to divert Thompson's chipped effort wide after he was wonderfully picked out by Curtis.

The Tangerines then came close when Holder saw his first shot blocked and the follow up denied by a super save by Tom Wright. Diss were perhaps enjoying their best spell of the game but were unable to capitalize when Betson headed wide and they were almost made to pay in the final minute of the half when Gibbons sent Thompson marauding down the right. Thommo picked out Jack Guyton in the area but he was unable to find the connection he was looking for and the ball ended up somewhere on Orchard Park.

Half-Time | Mulbarton Wanderers 0-0 Diss Town

The second half did not get off to the best start for Mulbarton as Gibbons looked to be in a bit of discomfort and had to be withdrawn but we did have a bench stacked with willing and able replacements and the energetic Dom Doggett was introduced.

Shortly afterwards and for the second game in a row, Mulberry Park witnessed a moment of controversy and it was the same man on the wrong end of the decision. Thompson sent a 25 yard half-volley crashing against the post and Sam Whiting was quickest to react and steered the ball goalwards. His shot gave Hayhoe an opportunity to smother the ball and he did just that, but not before the ball had crossed the line, by some distance. Unfortunately for Wanderers, the linesman was unable to get level with play and was also the wrong side of Hayhoe so was in no position to help Skoulding make the correct decision. Be sure to check out our matchday pictures to see the moment captured beautifully by our club photographer. To be fair to the officials, they do not have that luxury available so the decision had to be respected and Whiting's wait for his first goal continues.

Wanderers did well to use that moment of injustice as motivation and continued to look like the side most likely to score. Altay replaced Whiting and immediately began to make a nuisance of himself. Simpson was having a tremendous game and he confidently looked for the top corner when the ball fell to him at an acute angle 10 yards out but his attempt was just off target.

Time was running out for Wanderers and although Diss remained a threat on the counter it was Mulbarton who were carving out the clearer opportunities. Altay headed wide from a Guyton corner before a glorious chance fell to Doggett who set himself well before dragging his shot agonisingly wide of the post.

Diss provided a reminder that all three points were still up for grabs when Moore tried his luck from 20 yards but Wright was equal to it once again and quickly sent Wanderers on the counter and it was Hayhoe's turn to produce a fine save as he denied Guyton's attempt from the edge of the box.

Just when the home support thought it was going to be another one of those days, Simpson showed great vision to send a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Altay who bravely jumped to try to head the winner but he was flattened by the onrushing Hayhoe and Skoulding had little choice but to award a penalty.

History awaited and Altay climbed off the deck to claim the ball and confidently place it on the spot. He took a moment to compose himself whilst waiting for the referee to blow his whistle and when he finally did, El slotted the ball beyond the reach of Hayhoe and into the bottom corner to spark exuberant celebrations.

Nothing beats a stoppage time winner, especially when it is also the club's first ever goal that secures the first ever victory at the highest level we have ever featured! Eliot Altay.......... tek a bow son. You beautiful man.
