Wanderers put Stalham Town to the sword in a 7-0 rout featuring a hat-trick from debutant Jack Guyton.

The First Team had to wait a week longer than they would have liked to respond to our senior cup elimination at the hands of Wymondham Town two weeks ago and if it wasn't for the fine work of TH Groundcare then we might have had to wait even longer but the hard work that goes on behind the scenes paid dividends as we managed to avoid another weekend without first team football.

There were two new faces on show wearing blue and black as Jack Guyton was handed his first start and Scott Woodgate was named amongst the substitutes at a chilly Mulberry Park. It was evident from kick off that Wanderers were eager to put on a show as they started the game with a ferocious pace. Both sides exchanged an early opportunity apiece that were snuffed out well by each defence but the spectators did not have to wait too long for the first goal of the game. Simmo's goalbound strike was blocked into the path of Ben Thompson who pounced on the loose ball and thumped it into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0 after 6 minutes. That's the 20th goal in a Mulbarton shirt for the joint manager.

Wanderers continued on the offensive and Stalham were struggling to deal with the pace of Aulert combined with the movement of Thompson and Curtis. The midfield trio of Simpson, Gibbons and Guyton were quickly winning back possession whenever it was lost and following it up with some good link up play that produced several chances to double our lead. First, Thommo fired wide from distance then Gibbons exchanged passes with Guyton and continued with a surging run into the box before cutting the ball back to Chaz only for the ball to be poked away by a Stalham defender. A few minutes later and Aulert was at it again as he raced onto a ball played through by Simmo but he was forced to shoot from a wide angle and the danger was cleared before Curtis could arrive on the scene. There was no rest for the Stalham defence though as Guyton threaded the ball through to Thompson who beat the onrushing Grothier to the ball and squared for Guyton to stroke into an empty net and open his Wanderers account. Prolonged claims of offside were waved away by the referee and the game restarted with a 2-0 scoreline.

The task got even harder for the away side ten minutes later as they once again struggled to contain Aulert who was at full tilt down the left flank before delivering towards Thompson at the back post, this was blocked by Bailey but unfortunately for him it fell to Hayden Gibbons and he coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.

Grothier then made a string of fine saves and Town were in desperate need of half-time to regroup but matters got worse when we were awarded a penalty as Curtis was hauled down just as he knicked the ball away. After scoring one against us earlier in the season Guyton took the responsibility and although Grothier guessed the right way, it was placed beyond his reach and meant we went into the break with a commanding lead.

Half-Time | Mulbarton Wanderers 4-0 Stalham Town

Stalham began the second half a lot better and were playing a deeper line as they looked to avoid a repeat of the first half. They also began to play their way upfield and Wright had to be alert to clear the danger as their talisman Crosby raced through on goal.

There was then a good piece of play down the left as Bland combined well with Thompson and he spotted the run of Curtis who was denied by a superb save. Woodgate then came on for Thompson and he almost made an immediate impact when Guyton sent him down the right and he crossed into Curtis who was unfortunate to see his header strike the wrong side of the post.

Bennett was then sent on in place of Simpson and almost got himself on the scoresheet during his first involvement as Curtis sent him through on goal but Grothier got a strong hand to his attempted dink and the danger was mopped up by Clarke. 10 minutes later and the impressive Guyton was bundled down just outside the Stalham area which the referee deemed worthy of a second yellow card and Watling was sent for an early shower. Substitute Adam Bennett fancied his chances and curled a sweet effort over the wall and into the bottom corner to make it 5-0.

Not content with seeing out the game, Wanderers continued on the offensive in search of more goals. A couple of crosses from Woodgate and Gibbons were cleared well before Bland delivered a peach of a ball into Jamie Smith who calmly took a touch to beat his marker and finished with aplomb to make it 6-0 after 81 minutes.

There was still time for Guyton to seal a dream debut hat-trick when Gibbons crossed towards the back post and he sent a looping header over Grothier and this proved to be the end of a ruthless performance in front of goal and by far the finest first team display of the season.
