Wanderers Slump To Disappointing Defeat

A lack of cutting edge costs Wanderers dearly.

This week Wanderers were without Reading and Bland but were able to welcome back Curtis and Farrow who had missed the Acle game. Payne-Wilkins and Challen are still sidelined with injuries but we were able to name Danny McKail in the starting line-up who had completed a switch from Blofield United in the week and made a very assured debut at left back.

The opening twenty minutes were end-to-end with both sides looking to gain the upperhand early on but neither able to create a clear-cut chance due to some resolute defending. Wanderers put in a number of crosses that were easily dealt with by the CEYMS back line and at the other end the hosts were awarded numerous corner kicks which came to nothing.

With a minute left in the half CEYMS took the lead from one of their corner kicks. The initial ball across the six yard box wasn't cleared and it was turned back across the face of goal by an attacker, taking a couple of deflections away from despairing defenders until it fell to an unmarked attacker to poke home.

Half Time - CEYMS 1-0 Mulbarton

Wanderers came out of the blocks quickest in the second half and they themselves gained several corners and were having plenty of the ball in the final third. Josh Farrow's attempted lob was tipped over by the CEYMS keeper before another effort bounced off of the cross bar and was cleared to safety.

After an initial spell of domination the home side settled and looked dangerous on the counter attack. With fifteen minutes to go they scored a second, with Mulbarton pushed up searching for an equaliser they countered and a cross from the right was met by a CEYMS attacker to finish.

Wanderers threw men forward in hope of getting back into the game but a lack of quality in the final third and some very good defending from the hme side saw no real chances created. CEYMS then compounded the visitors' misery in the final minutes of the game scoring a similar goal to their second and securing a deserved win.

Full Time - CEYMS 3-0 Mulbarton

Whilst the scoreline doesn't really reflect the game there can be no doubt that CEYMS deserved all three points in this game thanks to some resolute defending and clinical finishing. Mulbarton just weren't at their best going forward and didn't create enough chances due to some poor decision making and a lack of quality when it mattered most.

Due to a rather secretive League Representative Match there is no game for Mulbarton, or most of the Premier Division, on the 12th of September. So we have a free weekend to contemplate ways to improve in time for the Mummery Cup game at home to the unbeaten Kirkley and Pakefield Reserves on September 19th.
