Our defence of the Mummery Cup continues tomorrow and our trip to Scole is the second of three consecutive away fixtures for the first team. This will be followed by three home fixtures as a result of being handed a home tie in the Senior Cup against Wymondham Town.

Wanderers go into tomorrow’s cup tie on the back of a return to winning ways in the league after recording a 4-2 victory away to Stalham Town. It was particularly nice to see four different names on the scoresheet with both Liam Brock and Hayden Gibbons notching their first goals for the club. Danny Self opened his account in the league with a lovely free-kick and the versitile John Curtis grabbed his second in as many games since swapping defence for attack.

Team News

A couple of changes from the team that beat Stalham as Jamie Smith and Joel Potter return to the matchday squad in place of Adam Bennett and Danny Bland.

Our Opponents

Form: WWLWW

Scole United have started the season well as they look to improve on last season’s thirteenth placed finish in Division 1 and their current form suggests they will be part of the promotion battle in a competitive league. We have seen from the performances of Bradenham Wanderers, Hellesdon and Beccles Town that there are some good teams coming out of that league that can hold their own in the Premier Division so we must be at our best on Saturday if we want to progress into the Quarter-Finals. Ben Norton-Hugman provides the biggest goalscoring threat after netting seven goals in eleven outings thus far. However, there are plenty of goals elsewhere from the likes of Chris Collins-Reed, David Coleman and James Harrison.

Head to Head

Although the second round tie will be our first meeting in the Mummery Cup, it will be the eighth meeting between the two sides which includes many epic promotion battles over the years. It all began in 2013/14 as we met for the first time in Division 2. United ran out 2-0 winners when we visited Ransome Avenue at Christmas but Wanderers came out on top at Mulberry Park with a 2-1 victory in April that ensured the title race would go down to the wire. A draw in our penultimate game of the season away to UEA allowed Scole to pip us to the title on the final day and both teams were promoted to Division 1.

It was December and end of season fixtures once again the following season. This time it was our turn to host at Christmas time as Scole took all three points following a 2-1 victory. United then completed the double over us with a final day victory by the same scoreline but a 3-0 defeat to Beccles Town the week before meant it wasn’t enough and we were crowned Division One Champions with Scole also promoted as runners-up.

It is fair to say that both teams then struggled in our first season in the Premier Division. Our first meeting of the campaign was in September as we hosted United in the Senior Cup and Scole once again came out on top with another 2-1 victory. Wanderers did not have to wait too long for an opportunity for revenge as we travelled to Ransome Avenue in October and ran out 4-1 winners. Scole then returned to Mulberry Park in April 2016 and secured three vital points in their battle to avoid relegation with a (you guessed it) 2-1 victory. This proved to be the final meeting between the two sides as Scole returned to Division 1 and Wanderers finished eighth.
