Wanderers inflict first defeat on Harleston in almost a year to book their place in the semi final of the Mummery Cup.

Mulbarton visited Harleston for the first of 2 games in 3 weeks in the cups.
Harleston’s impressive start to the season meant Mulbarton had to be at the races from the start until the end to get something from the game.
Harleston began the game in their usual passing style and Mulbarton started executing a game plan to attempt to combat the footballing style of Harleston.
The pattern of the game began with Harleston moving the ball well but Mulbarton matching them with great endeavour and togetherness. As the half progressed the game became a bit scrappy with some strange decision and the weather conditions making it hard for both sides. Mulbarton grew into the half and began to make inroads in the Harleston half with Thompson, Smith and Palmer a threat with quick play and pressing.
Both sides squandered half chances in the first half with the home side having the better of them that Curtis brilliantly headed off the line.
The moment that probably swung the game in Mulbarton's favour was the dismissal of James Pipe picking up a 2nd yellow for a foul on Bland.
Half time 0-0
Mulbarton began the 2nd half in similar fashion working on a game plan and 10 minutes into the half it paid off when Thompson and Durrant picked the pocket of a Harleston midfield and the latter turned to release Simpson (who replaced Palmer at half time) who fired the ball across box for it to find the on rushing McCloy (who replaced Payne-Wilkins after 55mins) who finished well with his left foot and 2nd touch since coming on.
This forced the home side to push again looking for an equaliser and naturally they left gaps at the back. After 67 minutes Mulbarton picked them off and got in down their right hand side with Smith and Simpson combining well to create an opportunity fire a shot in that spilt into McCloy’s path to flick up and nod in from close range.
Credit to Harleston, they changed shape and really went for the game and created a couple of good chances but Tom Wright had an exceptional afternoon and kept the home side at bay with a couple of brilliant saves 2 from free kicks from the dangerous Scott Roberts.
Mulbarton saw out the remaining minutes of the game in the same style as the rest of the game to take a place in the semi-final.
Credit to Harleston who are a very good side and will take a lot of beating in the league and when we return there in 2 weeks’ time for our Senior Cup encounter.
