Wanderers progressed in the Mummery Cup thanks to a late, late winner from Danny Self

Wanderers travelled to Sheringham in the Mummery Cup in what looked a tough tie.

The visitors made 2 changes to the starting 11 with Matty Banham coming in for David Rambsbottom at right back and John Curtis replacing Josh Guinness in goal. Jimmy McCloy returned to the squad after injury and Dom Doggett also came back in after scoring a hat trick for the reserves the previous week.

Mulbarton started the game at a very lively pace, with good pressing in forward areas and this start was rewarded when Mulbarton were awarded a free kick on the left hand side. Self delivered a low ball in through a large gap between the Sheringham wall and the defenders. The ball made its way across the 6 yard box for Thompson to tap home from close range.

Mulbarton continued to play at a high tempo creating numerous chances that were squandered. The Shannocks stuck at it and came into the game towards the end of the first half, building up some momentum leading up to the break. They created chances with the dangerous Wilton running in behind. McAvoy also went close for the home side with a free kick that clipped to top of Curtis' crossbar.

HT Sheringham 0-1 Wanderers

After some strong words and instructions at half time Mulbarton were back on it straight after the interval and scored minutes after the restart. Kierron Rose showed great composure to play a high ball inside first time to Self who looked up to see Mark Appleton spinning into space, the ball was delivered into Appleton's path and he sprinted clear of the Sheringham defence to fire home to double the lead.

Similar to the first 30 minutes Mulbarton pressed and rushed the home side and created a number of very good chances to put the game out of sight but failed to do so.

Wanderers were made to pay for this later in the game as Sheringham, to their credit, grew into the game. Young Ricky Bevis was a key factor in the home side’s improvement; his tenacious hard work and desire cause the Mulbarton defence problems and he got his rewards when he got between defenders in the box to head home a cross from the right.
This made for a tough last 10minutes of normal time for Mulbarton with the Shannocks piling men forward to try and take the game into extra time. They did this in the dying minutes thanks to some indecision in the Wanderers back line between goalkeeper and defenders, gifting a Sheringham player an advantage to header home and make the visitors pay for their many missed chances

FT Sheringham 2-2 Wanderers

After a very animated team talk from both managers it managed to spark the side into action again and they dominated the opening 10minutes of extra time, delivering balls into the box and again missing chances to kill the game.

HT in ET 2-2

Mulbarton continued to press and show great desire to get the result and come back from the set back of conceding the goals. They moved the ball well and looked the more likely during the 2nd period of extra time but as the minutes ticked down it looked unlikely that the goal would come and penalties loomed for both sides.
Until with 2 minutes to go the ball went out of play level with the Sheringham penalty area. Quick thinking from Rose to throw the ball back to Self who looked to take a touch and deliver the ball into the Sheringham area but as he wasn't closed down he took a 2nd touch inside and unleashed an unstoppable drive into the far top corner to win the game for Mulbarton.

In cup football it's all about progressing and MWFC did this but made hard work of doing so. Credit to Sheringham who showed great character and tried to play the game the right way and will be in the mix at the end of the season if they continue to play that way.
